Woodland Fairies

14"x 11"              oil

This double portrait commissioned by a former student was a joy to paint. I loved that the mother of the girls chose a reference photo displaying the adorable personalities of the children hamming it up rather than a stiff posed picture.

Interesting Article

oil         8"x 10"

Judy, another artist friend, taking a rest and reading a magazine article. This is a nice contrast between the cool blue of her sweater with the warm glow of her living room.

Morning Break

oil             8"x 10"

This time Dianne, another artist friend posed. I really like how the backlighting created strong plays of light across the table.

Solitaire

My artist friend, Ralphie, chose to play solitaire on her iPad while the rest of us painted her.

Sketching Me, Painting Her

oil               8"x 10"

Our group of artists has been getting together to paint, encourage, and motivate each other. Often we paint outdoors (en plein air) but when the weather started turning cold and rainy we moved indoors taking turns meeting in each others homes. This painting was a challenge for me because of the split focal points. What to focus on?  The shiny, elaborate samovar or my fellow artist-friend Marci? I tried to tone down the samovar and use the cooler colors on Marci (contrasting with the warm colors of the room) to draw the eye to her.

Foggy Morning

8"x 10"             oil

With this painting I was challenging myself to keep the colors very muted to capture the lifting morning fog against the cliffs.  The sun only illuminated some of the newly greened grasses on the hillside and the highlights on the ocean. It made my day when a lovely couple from Reno who were visiting our coastal area bought it to remember their trip. Thank you, Janet and James!

Marigolds and Oranges

7"x 5"            oil

I really enjoyed painting this still life. I love the contrast between the cobalt blue vase and the oranges and yellows of the fruit and flowers. A friend (and collector of my work) loved this piece too and bought it! Thank you, Cathy!

Big Tree, Needle Rock House

This wonderful old house, that is now State Park headquarters for the Sinkyone Wilderness, was built around the late 1800's and is said to be haunted.

The Kiss

6"x6"                oil

This was a commissioned painting from a photo that got water damaged. The young woman in the photo wanted to preserve this special moment in a more durable form. I abstracted the background and pulled the color of her hat into the picture in other places to balance the color harmony better. I loved the way the angle of her body created a dynamic diagonal towards him and completed a circle with the angle of his guitar. A very sweet picture!

Old Hen House, Community Park

6"x 8"                oil

It wasn't raining so my artist pals, Alicia and Diana, and I went to the Community Park in Garberville to do some plein air painting.  Cal Fire and the cons were there doing a lot of clearing and burning. They had already opened up a lot of the space between the barns and other old buildings, so the views were completely different from the last time I painted there. It was so much fun--but mighty chilly!

Shelter Cove Sundown

5"x 7"                  oil

This was the view walking back towards the boat ramp. The sun was just setting, silhouetting the cliffs and trees while casting its brilliant light across the ocean and shore. I loved the warm light against the rocks, the wet sheen on the sand, and the lit up pools of water.

Last Light on the Cliffs

7"x 5"               oil

I loved the puddles of seawater holding the mirrored cliffs like molten gold.

Reflections Connections

8"x10"                 oil

Late one afternoon my husband and I decided to take a walk on the beach at low tide. I found the glowing cliffs and their matching reflections breathtaking. Luckily I had my camera and took a bunch of snaps to later use as reference photos in my studio. This is number one of a few different views.

Fall Colors in Briceland

5"x 7"                     oil

We were at Beginnings in Briceland, CA this weekend to attend a (possibly) once-in-a-lifetime congregation to honor pioneers of the solar industry (my husband Charlie being one of them) who had been gathered from all around the US and beyond by the organizational zeal of Jeff Spies.
It was a great party. Not only did I enjoy meeting so many fascinating, brilliant, innovative people, but I spent a lot of time with my camera trying to capture potential paintings--like this one--showing the incredible colors of fall in this beautiful valley. It had rained briefly that morning, and showers continued intermittently throughout the day, creating a mist that softened the distant colors.

Fiery Skies

6"x 8"   oil

The sky looked so beautiful the next morning after the thunderstorms that I decided before we left the lake to take some last-minute photos. We didn't know yet that fires had started and the lovely orange glow was caused by them. We were truly lucky to have escaped when we did as the roads would soon be closed and too dangerous to drive on. Later seeing online photos of the fires raging all around the lake made me realize how precious my few pictures are as the woods will never look quite the same again.

Thunderheads Building

5"x 7"    oil

My husband and I just got back from a short but way too exciting camping trip with old friends. My husband and one of our group had both been fire-fighters and when they looked at the clouds piling up over the lake they predicted thunder--and lightning--coming soon. I managed to take some photos which I painted this (and other paintings) from before the serious thunder, lightning, and rain began. We sat out the brief thunderstorm in our various campers all the time worrying about the possibility of fire from the lightning in our drought-stricken area...and, sure enough, fires did start. We left the following morning just in the nick of time as we found out when we got home that the lake was surrounded by fires and the roads were being closed!

The Road Less Traveled

5"x 7"   oil

There are two roads that can take you to 'town' which is 25 miles away. One road is the commonly used road--it's faster--and this one is very literally the road less traveled. This particular bend in the road was where I set up my easel the first time I ever painted with oils outside. There were so few cars you could actually do that. This time, I just looked through my reference photos to take me back to that peaceful country road.

Barn, Cloudy Morning

5"x 7"   oil

I returned to the community garden/park where there are several of these wonderful old barns. I think this is one of my favorites as I've painted it now from many angles. This particular morning it was chilly and overcast and the sun never did come out while we were there. Still, I bundled up in every layer I'd brought and managed to get a painting started. I finished it in my studio from photos I'd taken.

Barn, Spring Morning

5"x 7"   oil

I just love these old weathered barns and the smells of the grass and flowers. A painter friend and I went here to paint 'en plein air'. It was such a beautiful clear, warm day.
